Here at White Mountains Ranch we are working on becoming a nationally recognized breeder of purebred Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas. We feed them 100% Organic feed, Organic BOSS, Organic Scratch, and Organic Fruits and Veggies from our gardens. We hand raise our Ameraucanas with care and affection and spend time with them every day.
The true Ameraucana is an APA recognized breed of chicken developed in the United States. The Ameraucana is often confused with other chicken breeds, especially the Araucana and Easter Egger chickens (sometimes labeled Americanas). While similar, these three are separate breeds, and only two are recognized by the American Poultry Association. True Ameraucanas are rare.
Ameraucanas have muffs and beards, slate colored legs, and lay various shades of blue eggs. They come in both a large and bantam variety. Eight colors are officially recognized for poultry shows by the American Poultry Association: Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten and White.
In spite of the Ameraucana's long history, it is correct and accurate to say that the “AMERAUCANA” is “America’s most newly recognized APA/ABA Standard Breed.” It wasn't accepted until 1980! As you may know, a breed is NOT a BREED until the APA or ABA say it’s a “BREED”. For those who may not know the breed characteristics, “Ameraucanas” are first and foremost BLUE EGG layers. They MUST have “pea combs”, and be bearded and muffed and tailed, and CANNOT have any tufts. They also MUST have slate blue legs, and red ear lobes (females pale). They cannot be rumpless or tailless like the related Araucana. They also must meet EXACTLY the standards of color set forth by the APA.
Just an interesting bit of science; There has been a definite relationship established between the “Pea Comb” gene and the “Blue Egg” gene. Both these genes have been shown to be carried on the same chromosome, and are thus closely related! In 'most' cases a bird that has a pea comb will lay a blue or blue based egg.

Wheaten and Blue Wheaten are two of the very few colors of Ameraucanas that you can interbreed and still get the same colored purebred babies. As such, our Wheaten and Blue Wheatens are kept together. For hatching eggs we cannot sell specificities of one color.
These are our purebred Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Chickens. These are NOT Easter Eggers.
