Having researched the technique, the evening of bringing my first goat home I set out to "milk". I had my milking stanchion, found from criagslist, a bucket of clean hot water with a rag and a touch of bleach, and a clean sterilized bucket for putting the milk in. Besides the fact that my goat was NOT trained to use the milking stand, everything went surprisingly well. It's pretty easy to milk a goat once you get the concept down. One thing I hadn't anticipated was the soreness in my hands that I experienced for the months after. My hands don't get sore anymore, but there has been, over the years, plenty of frustrating times, spilled milk, and stepped on hands.
Me, being the silly person I am, just up and decided to buy five milking goats, without every having owned or milked a goat before! It wasn't a rash decision, but one based on careful calculations, thinking, debating, and research. Never once did it cross my mind that I couldn't or wouldn't be able to do it.

AuthorsIn 2009, we moved to a rural rental on the outskirts of San Diego to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and to get away from the chemicals in our food and in our life. Little did we know that just a few years later we would be real farmers; growing fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as many different kinds of chickens, ducks, turkey, bunnies, guineas, quail, goats and more! We left the suburbs for "Green Acres" and haven't looked back since! Categories
